George Lopez at The City National Civic! #SanJoseUnplugged

Want to know a crazy tidbit about me? Prior to my media trip to San Jose, I had never been to see a comedian live! I suppose I’ve shied away somewhat from comedy acts as they have always seemed awkward to me; listening to someone turn life into jokes, & hoping you think they’re funny, or else you’re left with the tough decision, do I laugh anyway? Or just sit here quietly?!

Thankfully, I had nothing to worry about since we spent a Saturday evening on the town to head out to The City National Civic Theatre to see the one & only, George Lopez, take the stage! I’ve been a fan of George since his ABC sitcom debuted in 2003, & I am a proud fan of The Beverly Hills Chihuahua movies (Just ask my boyfriend….he will pretend he doesn’t know me as I weigh in on the best of the trilogy), in which Lopez stars as the voice of Pappi.

George

Lopez has chosen a great, unique way to start off his shows; each tour stop features a wonderful, local High School Mariachi band. A perfect way to pay homage to both his heritage & showcase the musical talent that is within your local school.

Once inside & in our seats, San Jose native, Bryan Kellen took the stage & his set alone was worth the admission price! He was absolutely hilarious as he told us about his lovely domestic life with a Latina; a great line was that no matter where they go, his Mrs. runs into a relative, & if they’re in the dark, she still can find an Uncle by shouting out a whistle! 😉

Something about the show I thought was really cool, & you will have to tell me if its customary, was that as SOON as Kellen exited the stage, the lights stayed down & out George Lopez came out to WAR’s song, Lowrider (Also the song used in his sitcom’s opening credits). We all went wild, of course! No different from a concert.

What kept striking me was how many of his hysterical jokes were not that much a joke! I could seriously relate so much to many of his lines. Whether he commented on our obesity epidemic & food allergies (“when Latino kids are getting sick from milk, they’re just yelled at that they’re not drinking it fast enough!”) to Journey’s Don’t Stop Believin’ on cue in the minds of white boys when their “big moment” happens, the whole audience was on the floor for nearly 2 hours at Lopez. Myself, included!

He also made sure to incorporate plenty of local color, with quips at The Jazz Festival going on & how Latinos helped re-model the newly renovated venue we were in. He also invented a new hashtag! Apparently, if you’re not Latino, you’re dubbed #OTM, “Other Than Mexican”! ;

While Lopez’s sets are definitely not for those easily offended, or under 18, for that matter, if you do not fall under either of those categories, I highly recommend catching George Lopez on his current tour. He knows how to keep his crowd entertained, laughing every time, & you will even learn some new hashtags for your Twitter account 😉

Oddly enough, this weekend will find me at another comedy act; Michael & I are going to Hollywood Babble-On with Kevin Smith & Ralph Garman! Mike has made me a huge Smith fan so I cannot wait for this adventure.
